The Destination
The first step of any trip is deciding where and when to go. The destination can be a lifelong dream or a spontaneous travel deal. Either way, you’ll want to maximize your time enjoying the adventure you’ll soon plan
Inspiration
What inspires you to travel? Is there a culture, a cuisine, an activity or event, or a natural wonder that you hope to see? Maybe a destination for all of these?
Whether it’s a far off dream, on the bucket list, or the next expected trip, start pinning destinations on a map (either physical or digital) to organize the locations you hope to see.
Tools for pinning:
Google My Maps: A digital map of pins with different colors, icons, and routes that can be saved on a desktop and loaded on the Google Maps app.
Pinterest: Create an account and "pin" destinations to your digital wall
Corkboard: A physical display for places, photos, articles, and ideas that can be hung on a wall for inspiration, motivation, or even just a talking point.
Schedule
Many workplaces start out at only 10 days of paid vacation time, allowing for only one 2-week or two 1-week trips. How can you push that further? First, check your work’s holiday calendar.
Many have Thanksgiving Day off plus the day after, so including the whole week in your trip allows for a 9-day itinerary while only taking 3 days off. This is a great time for traveling to warmer destinations in Asia or Latin America, or the Southern Hemisphere, where it is their spring.
A similar effect is seen for Independence Day or Christmas / New Years. Depending on the days these holidays fall, you could have July 3rd or Boxing Day (December 26) off if it’s adjacent to the weekend. These times are typically the busiest internationally, so if you choose these times, book as early as you can.

Timing
With your trip inspirations pinned and PTO , when do you hope to go?
Some events like festivals, sports, or concerts are fixed, but for other destinations, there are ideal and poor times to visit.
Create a chart with your destinations (not too granular) and when you could potentially travel there.
